Are You Smarter than a 7th Grader? Creating Green Living Spaces to House the Neediest |

Designing affordable housing for those most in need is enormously complicated. But middle
schoolers are taking up this challenge for the 2009-2010 Future City Competition. And, to make it even more interesting,
they are being asked to do this while adhering to LEED green building standards. The North Texas Regional is looking for
engineer-volunteers willing to serve as role models for the next generation of technical professionals. |

North Texas Middle School Students Vie for National Recognition |

Future City Competitions will be held in January 2009 in 40 regions across the country. In North Texas the competition takes place on
January 24, 2009 at University of Texas in Arlington at Nedderman Hall. This year's theme is water -
hundreds of students from the area have been designing systems to conserve and reuse our most precious resource.
First-place winners will receive an all-expense-paid trip to the 17th annual Future
City National Finals in Washington, D.C. during National Engineers Week. |

Students in Future City Competition Envision a Better World |

Forty-one teams of middle school students will present their ideas for cities of the future
in the annual Future City Competition, held Saturday, January 24 at the University of Texas at Arlington.
The teams come from schools in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and from across Texas - as far east as Tyler, as far
west as Lubbock, as far south as Austin. |

Building the Next Generation of Engineers One Volunteer at a Time |

Now in its 17th year, the Future City Competition makes engineering come alive and has
been credited with guiding many students to consider engineering careers. Critical to that success are the
volunteer engineer mentors, who serve as role models for young minds eager to learn. Future City needs
engineers from every field to volunteer this fall and winter. |

As the Well Goes Dry, North Texas Middle School Students Meet
the Challenge |

Each year, students in the Future City Competition are challenged to research and write an essay on a
pressing social need. This year's topic is water use. Since each home is in essence a microcosm of the global situation,
students will "design an innovative process that will create a self-sufficient system within the home which conserves,
water sources." |

The 2008 North Texas Regional National Engineer's Week Future City Competition was
held January 26, 2008 at the University of TX at Arlington. Fifty-five teams from all over North Texas
competed for cash awards and the chance to compete in the National Engineer's Week Future City Competition
in Washington, DC. After an exciting day of presentations and competition, the first place winner was the
Varavara Team from the Westwood School in Dallas, TX. |
